“You’ve been awful quiet tonight,” Drew said at her door as he held both of her hands in his. He leaned down to get a better look at her face. “Something wrong?”

“No. I just... I was wondering. Umm, Aaron invited us to spend the Super Bowl at your place tomorrow, and...”

Relief flooded through his face. “Cool. You told him yes, right?”

She looked up at him and smiled. “I didn’t know what to tell him.”

Uncertainty jumped into his eyes. “Well, do you want to go over there?”

“Yeah. I just wasn’t sure you did.”

“It’s my place, why wouldn’t I?”

“No, reason,” she said, wishing her heart didn’t feel like it was standing in front of a truck. “I guess I’ll be there at three?”

“Sounds good,” Drew said and leaned into to kiss her only once. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”

She nodded as he let her hands drop. With one more smile, he turned for the stairs, and her heart flopped into her shoes. He had been the perfect gentleman, putting her wishes in front of his own. If she had asked for the most important things in a mate, she couldn’t have gotten anyone more perfect than Drew, and yet, there was something missing. Some piece that she couldn’t quite figure out.

Shaking the feelings away, she turned and opened her door. Why can’t I ever just be happy with what I’ve got? He’s great, we’re great together. Be happy, and move on. But to her heart, it wasn’t that simple because it wasn’t Drew she wanted, and it never would be.
